Chook water green by lunchtime?
Thread this four outlet attachment onto the outlet of a 20 litre drum, fill the drum, and your chickens and ducks help themselves to clean water. The system is sealed: no open cups, no scummy bowls, nothing for insects to get into overnight.
How does it work?
The attachment threads onto the drum through a 3/4 inch male BSP fitting in the centre. Water flows from the drum into the modular pipe and sits behind the four forward-facing horizontal nipples. When a bird pecks a nipple, water is released. When it stops, the nipple seals. There is no float, no cup and no opening.
Will it fit my drum?
It is sized for the Dine-A-Chook 20 litre black drum, and fits 10, 15 and 20 litre food-grade plastic drums with a matching 3/4 inch BSP threaded outlet. Use an opaque drum: clear drums let sunlight through, and sunlight is what grows algae in the water. Not sure about your drum? Contact us before you order. Need the drum as well? Add the 20L black drum, made to fit it. Otherwise any opaque 10, 15 or 20 litre food-grade drum with a 3/4 inch BSP outlet will do.
How many chickens or ducks does it suit?
Up to 40 birds, at 10 per nipple. Four outlets also means more birds drink at the same moment, which matters in a bigger flock where the top hens guard the water. A hen drinks about 500ml a day, so a 20 litre drum is roughly four days for 10 hens, two days for 20 and about a day for 40 in mild weather, less in real heat. The 40 is how many birds the four nipples can serve, not how long the drum lasts. Smaller flock? The twin horizontal nipple drinker has two nipples and suits up to 20 birds.
Will my chickens work out how to use it?
Most do within a day or two. If your hens have only ever drunk from a bowl, tap each nipple yourself so they see the water release, and take the old waterer away once they are drinking confidently. Chicks and pullets raised around the system pick it up without any training.
How do I set it up?
Thread the central fitting into the outlet of your drum and tighten by hand; a wrap of plumber’s tape never hurts. Set the drum on the adjustable drum drinker stand (sold separately), a shelf or blocks so the nipples sit at about chest height for your shortest bird, fill the drum, and you are done.
How is it backed?
3-year warranty on the frame, which Dine-A-Chook manufactures, and 12 months on the horizontal nipples. Colour loss and fading, and rodent damage, are not covered. Full terms on our warranty page. Delivery is a flat $22.95 NZ-wide, any size order.
