Build your own drum drinker, starting with the right drum
This is the drum under every Dine-A-Chook 20 litre drinker, sold on its own. It is custom-made in Australia for Dine-A-Chook, heavier than an ordinary drum, UV treated, and made to measure for our drinker outlets, so a do-it-yourself chicken waterer goes together without any guesswork.
Which outlets fit it?
Any Dine-A-Chook drum outlet. For nipples, the four outlet horizontal nipple drinker suits up to 40 chickens or ducks and the twin horizontal nipple drinker up to 20. Why a black drum?
Sunlight is what grows algae in drinking water. A black, UV-treated drum keeps light off the water, so it stays clean for longer between rinses. Keep the drum in the shade as well: cool water is what the birds want on a hot afternoon.
Where should it go?
On a flat, shaded spot, raised so the outlets sit at the right height for your smallest bird: on the adjustable drum drinker stand (sold separately), a crate or a couple of blocks. A hen drinks about 500ml a day, so 20 litres is roughly a week for six hens or five days for eight in mild weather, and about half that in real heat.
