20 Litre Drum Drinkers
A 20 litre drum drinker is the drinker you fill once a week. Twenty litres is about a week of water for six hens, or five days for eight, in a sealed black drum that keeps the light, the dirt and the droppings out. The birds drink from genuine Lubing cups or nipples clipped into a frame at the base, and the level window on the side tells you when it is time to top up. Which drum drinker do I need?
- Five cups: the drum for a flock of ten or more, or any flock with a bully. Five birds drink at once.
- Four cups and three cups: the same drum for a medium flock.
- One cup: a week of water for a small flock, at the lowest price in the range.
- Two cups and a nipple: for a mixed flock. The chickens use the cups and the ducks use the nipple.
- Three nipples: the duck drum. No open water for a duck to foul, and a dry duck house. See all the duck waterers.
Cups decide how many birds drink at the same moment; the 20 litres decides how often you fill it. The number of cups is not a flock size. For more than about 20 chickens, run two drums in different spots so every bird has a cup within reach.
How it works
Water sits in the drum and feeds the outlets by gravity. Each Lubing cup carries the Dine-A-Chook float upgrade, so it refills itself as the level drops and the birds always find water at the same height; there is nothing to press and nothing to learn. Fill it through the lid, or leave a hose in and fill it in place. The drum is opaque and UV-treated, so sunlight cannot grow algae in it, and everything the water touches is lead-free and BPA-free.
What is in the box
The 20L drum with lid, the click-and-connect outlet frame, and the cups or nipples with floats fitted. The drum is 375mm high and 283mm across and weighs about 1.15kg empty. Stand it on a level block, a paver or a sturdy shelf so the cups sit at the back-of-neck height of your smallest bird, in the shade if you can. Put a hose-filled drum where the hose reaches.

Will it freeze in winter?
Twenty litres in a sealed drum loses heat slowly and the drum will not crack in frost. On the coldest mornings check that the cups themselves have not iced over.
Can I fill it from outside the coop?
Yes, leave a hose in the lid and fill it in place. If you would rather never fill it, a mains pressure drinker connects to the hose and tops itself up.
Is there a stand?
