One drum for chickens and ducks together
A 20 litre sealed drum with two Lubing cups and a stainless steel Lubing nipple on the front. The chickens drink from the cups; the ducks, who empty a cup onto the ground with one dip of the bill, take their water from the nipple a drop at a time. One reservoir, one refill, a dry coop. It also suits a flock of chickens where you want a nipple as the third, most hygienic outlet.
How long 20 litres lasts
An average hen drinks around 500ml a day, and up to a litre when it is genuinely hot or she is laying hard. So a full drum is roughly a week for six hens, five days for eight, or about three days for a dozen, in mild weather. In a heatwave, halve that and check the level window daily.
Litres and cups are two different things
The litres decide how often you refill it. The cups decide how many birds can drink at the same moment. Two cups and a nipple suits a mixed flock of chickens and ducks, or a small chicken flock that also gets a hygienic nipple outlet. Neither number is a flock size. If refilling is the job you want rid of altogether, a mains pressure drinker runs off a tap or a header tank and never needs filling.
Why the water stays clean
Open troughs are dirty within the hour and green within the week. Here the water sits in a black, opaque drum that keeps light out, and only ever reaches a bird through the cup. Rinse the cups when you refill and the flock is drinking what came out of your tap. Clean water is the cheapest thing you can do for laying, and for keeping parasites and gut problems out of a coop.
How it is built
| Drum | 20 litre black drum, Australian made, with a lid and a water-level window down the side |
|---|---|
| Outlet frame | Dine-A-Chook click-and-connect modular frame in UV-treated ASA — pushes together, no glue, no tools, and cups can be added or removed later |
| Cups | Two genuine Lubing cups, made in Germany, each with the Dine-A-Chook float upgrade, plus one stainless steel Lubing nipple |
| Water contact | Lead-free and BPA-free. No glue, no adhesives, nothing to rust |
| Filling | Lift the lid and pour, or run a hose in. The lid keeps rain, leaves and birds out |
The float is the part that does the work. It refills each cup automatically as the level drops, so the birds always find water at the same height instead of having to press anything. They do not need to learn a mechanism; most flocks are drinking from it within the hour.
Where to put it
On a flat, shaded spot, raised so the cups sit about level with the eyes of your smallest bird: the adjustable drum drinker stand (sold separately), a crate, a couple of blocks. Shade matters twice over. Cool water is what the birds want on a hot afternoon, and it slows algae. The drum stands on its own base; the cups come off the front of the frame, so it needs no wall. Ducks only? The duck drum drinker runs three nipples and no cups.
Cups, nipples, or both?
Chickens drink naturally from a cup, which holds a visible pool; ducks want to dunk the whole bill and empty it. A nipple gives water a drop at a time when a bird pecks the pin, keeps the ground dry, and ducks learn it in a day. This drum gives you both. For chickens only, the three cup drum is the same size with a third cup in place of the nipple; for ducks only, the duck drum drinker has three nipples.
