Fill it once, forget it for the week
A 20 litre sealed drum with two Lubing cups on the front, and the adjustable stand to put it on. Set it in the shade, fill it, and for most backyard flocks that is the water sorted until the weekend. Each cup holds a little clean water and refills itself as the birds drink, and the other 19 litres stay shut away from feet, droppings and sunlight. Two cups means two birds drink at the same moment.
How long 20 litres lasts
An average hen drinks around 500ml a day, and up to a litre when it is genuinely hot or she is laying hard. So a full drum is roughly a week for six hens, five days for eight, or about three days for a dozen, in mild weather. In a heatwave, halve that and check the level window daily.
Litres and cups are two different things
The litres decide how often you refill it. The cups decide how many birds can drink at the same moment. Two cups comfortably service up to 12 chickens, depending on coop size and access. Neither number is a flock size. If refilling is the job you want rid of altogether, a mains pressure drinker runs off a tap or a header tank and never needs filling.
Why the water stays clean
Open troughs are dirty within the hour and green within the week. Here the water sits in a black, opaque drum that keeps light out, and only ever reaches a bird through the cup. Rinse the cups when you refill and the flock is drinking what came out of your tap. Clean water is the cheapest thing you can do for laying, and for keeping parasites and gut problems out of a coop.

The float is the part that does the work. It refills each cup automatically as the level drops, so the birds always find water at the same height instead of having to press anything. They do not need to learn a mechanism; most flocks are drinking from it within the hour.
Where to put it
The stand is what sets the height. It lifts the drum base to 55mm, 125mm, 200mm or 275mm, so the cups sit about level with the eyes of your smallest bird now and can come up as young birds grow. It slots together without tools in under five minutes and is cut in Townsville from ACM composite panel, the same material used in commercial signage, so it is UV stable and corrosion resistant. Already have a drum? The adjustable drum drinker stand is sold on its own. Put the stand on a flat, shaded spot. Shade matters twice over. Cool water is what the birds want on a hot afternoon, and it slows algae. The cups come off the front of the frame, so it needs no wall. Ducks in the flock? Look at the twin cup and nipple drum or the duck drum drinker instead.
How many cups?
Same 20 litre drum, same frame, same fittings, in single cup, three cup, four cup and five cup versions as well. The drum decides how often you refill; the cups decide how many birds drink at once. Pick the cup count for the number of birds that turn up to the water together, and go up a size if the top hen is guarding it.
