Which automatic drinker do I need?
- Header tank, two cups: the one most flocks want. About 8 to 16 chickens, two birds drinking at once.
- Header tank, one cup: up to about 8 chickens.
- Header tank, four cups: about 16 to 30 chickens, or a flock with a bully.
- One nipple, three nipples or five nipples: nipple outlets for ducks, geese and mixed flocks, or for anyone who wants no open water at all. As a guide, one nipple for every six to eight birds.
- Compact twin cup: no header tank, a 345mm unit with a high-pressure valve that connects straight to the tap. For small coops where a tank will not fit. Needs a pressurised supply.

The header tank drinkers run on mains pressure, a garden tap, or gravity from a rainwater tank. The header tank isolates the pressure from your supply, so it does not matter whether your tank holds 500 or 5,000 litres or how high it sits. Drawing from a rainwater tank, an inline filter before the drinker is worth having to catch sediment. The compact twin cup is the exception: with no tank of its own it needs a pressurised supply, a mains tap or a pump.
What is in the box, and how long it takes
Each header tank drinker arrives with the tank and valve, the aluminium bracket pre-assembled, the outlet frame with cups or nipples fitted, a 13mm garden hose fitting and a stainless steel clamp. The brackets are cut on our own CNC machine. Screw the bracket to a post or wall at the right height, push the hose on, clamp it, turn on the tap. Under 20 minutes. The header tank is 364 x 200 x 250mm and holds about 3 to 4 litres, so it weighs about 5kg full.
Why the water stays clean
There is no open water anywhere in the system. The tank is sealed and UV-treated, the cups refill themselves as the birds drink and the nipples release a drop only when pecked. Nothing for a hen to stand in, nothing for the sun to grow algae in, and nothing on the floor to tip over. Everything the water touches is lead-free and BPA-free.
Cups or nipples?
Chickens prefer cups: the Dine-A-Chook float upgrade keeps water sitting in the cup, so they drink as they would from a puddle. Ducks and geese foul a cup within minutes, so for waterfowl, and for mixed flocks, choose nipples. A nipple releases water only when the bird pecks it, which keeps the duck house dry.
