The compact automatic drinker for a small coop
All the benefit of a mains-pressure drinker without the header tank. This is a 345 mm wall-mounted unit with two Lubing cups and a high-pressure valve built in: connect a garden hose, turn on the tap, and the cups keep themselves full for as long as the tap is on. Nothing to refill, nothing to scrub, and it fits where a tank will not.
How it works
Connect a standard garden hose to the 13 mm inlet adaptor and turn on the tap. The valve inside holds mains pressure and only lets water through as the cups draw it down, so each cup sits full and refills itself as the birds drink. Because there is no tank, it needs a pressurised supply: a mains tap or a pump, not gravity from a rainwater tank. For gravity or tank supplies, choose a header tank drinker.
Why the cups refill themselves
Cheap drinker cups need the bird to press the float down to release water. If she does not press hard enough, or the float sticks, or she is small and timid, she does not drink. Every Lubing cup here comes with its original float fitted, plus our Australian-made upgraded float. The upgrade has a larger contact section that holds the valve open longer as the cup fills, so there is more water sitting in the cup. As the level drops the float drops with it, the valve opens, and the cup refills. Your chickens just drink.
Cups or nipples?
Cups are more forgiving across a range of water pressures, chickens take to them quickly, and you mount them at eye level for your smallest bird. Nipples are exceptionally clean, the commercial standard for layers and breeders, and need consistent head pressure of about 35 to 50 cm. Got ducks? Nipples are usually better, because ducks carry dirt in their bills and foul a cup faster; the three nipple drinker is the duck version of this unit. Ducks still need a bucket or pond deep enough to dunk in.
Installation
Two stainless steel brackets and screws are in the box. Mount it on a solid wall or post with the cups at eye level for your smallest bird, fit the inlet adaptor and clamp, connect the hose, turn on the tap. Watch the flock for the first hour to make sure everyone can reach.
A note on maintenance
Lubing cups all but eliminate spillage, but they are not maintenance-free. Hose the cups out weekly. Every few months, take the frame off and clean it properly. If a cup ever drips, sediment around the stainless valve is nearly always the cause: rinse it, and on hard or bore water a vinegar rinse clears mineral deposits.

Compact or header tank?
Choose the compact unit for a small coop on a mains tap. Choose a header tank drinker when the supply is a rainwater tank or gravity feed, when you want more than two outlets, or for nipples: the header tank isolates the pressure and feeds four cups or up to five nipples.
Who makes this
We are Ryan and Kara, based in Townsville. Dine-A-Chook started in 2009 as a weekend project in the garage: we had chickens, we were frustrated with the gear available, so we made our own. More than 80,000 customers later, we are still a family business. The aluminium brackets are cut on our own CNC machine, the fittings are injection-moulded in Brisbane, and the Lubing components come from Germany because nothing else matches them for reliability. This is not imported and rebadged. It is designed here, made here, and backed by people who use it. Questions? Get in touch and you will talk to someone who keeps chickens.
