A quarter sheet of nest pad, to cut to any nest box

A 467 x 302mm piece of genuine Jansen nest pad. Trim it to fit a nest box, a milk crate, a home-made box or anything else you nest hens in. Enough for one nest box, with a strip left over. Want it ready to drop in with no cutting? The pre-cut nesting pad is already cut to 276 x 285mm.

How do I cut it?

The pad cuts cleanly with a decent pair of household scissors, or a utility knife against a straight edge. No heat, no special tools. Lay your nest box on top, draw round the inside, and cut. If you are lining several boxes, cut one, check the fit, then use it as the template for the rest.

Why a pad at all?

A nest liner gives the hen something to settle into, keeps eggs off bare timber so fewer crack, and lifts the nest off the floor of the box so droppings and damp bedding do not sit against the eggs. When it gets dirty you pull it out, hose it, let it dry and put it back, far quicker than digging out and replacing straw or shavings.

It arrives rolled

The pad ships rolled, so it will arrive with a curl in it. Lay it flat, or upside down in the sun for ten minutes, and it settles. Let it relax before you cut it.

What is it made of?

Genuine Jansen Poultry Equipment (JPE) Premium+ nest pad material from the Netherlands, the same commercial-grade matting used in production layer sheds and the same material our pre-cut nesting pads are cut from. Moulded synthetic, washable, and built to be walked on by birds every day for years.

Q. How many nest boxes will this cover?
A. One, with a strip left over: this piece is 467 x 302mm. That is based on a nest box floor of roughly 276 x 285mm, the size our pre-cut pad is cut to. Measure yours first: a bigger box means fewer per sheet. To line two or more boxes, the half or full sheet is the better buy.
Q. How do I cut it?
A. Household scissors will do it, or a utility knife run against a straight edge. The material cuts cleanly and does not fray, so the edge does not need finishing. Let the roll relax flat first.
Q. Will it fit a milk crate or a home-made box?
A. That is exactly what it is for. At 467 x 302mm it covers most improvised nest boxes with room to trim. Measure the inside of yours before ordering if it is unusually large.
Q. How do I clean it?
A. Pull it out, hose it down, stand it up to dry and drop it back in. It does not absorb water the way straw or shavings do, so it dries quickly. Never use boiling water on it.
Q. Which birds is it suitable for?
A. Chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl and most other poultry. It is the same material used commercially under laying hens, so it stands up to daily use.
Q. Not sure which size suits your boxes?
A. Get in touch with your box measurements and we will tell you straight.
