Tired of raking soiled straw out of the nest box every few days?

Straw and shavings look right for about 48 hours. Then they get scratched out of the box, soiled with droppings, or packed down hard, and you are back to stripping and refilling. Commercial egg farmers solved this decades ago by switching to moulded synthetic nest pads. This is that same pad, cut for a backyard nest box.

Who makes it?

Jansen Poultry Equipment is a Dutch manufacturer that has been building commercial laying systems since the 1970s. Their nest pads sit under millions of hens in automatic nesting systems around the world. You are getting commercial-grade hygiene and durability, sized for a backyard coop.

How does it help my hens and my eggs?

The cushioned surface gives hens a consistent, comfortable place to lay. A comfortable nest encourages hens to use the box instead of laying on the coop floor, and the cushioning protects eggs from cracking when several hens share a bay.

Will it fit my nest box?

It is cut to 276 x 285mm, and it trims with household scissors if your box is a little smaller. Bigger box, a milk crate or a home-made box? The same material comes as a quarter sheet, a half sheet or a full sheet to cut to any size.

How do I clean it?

Lift it out of the nest box, hose it off, and let it drip dry before refitting. For a deeper clean, a scrub brush and a mild poultry-safe disinfectant will get into the texture. Because it is synthetic, it does not absorb droppings the way straw does. Never use boiling water on it.

How many do I need?

One pad per nesting bay. They are sold individually so you only buy what you need, and so you can add a spare to rotate in while one is being washed.

Q. Who makes this nesting pad?
A. Jansen Poultry Equipment is a Dutch manufacturer that has been building commercial laying systems since the 1970s. Their nest pads sit under millions of hens in automatic nesting systems around the world.
Q. Will it fit my nest box?
A. It is cut to 276 x 285mm and trims with household scissors. For bigger or odd-shaped boxes, the same material is sold as quarter, half and full sheets to cut to size.
Q. Can I wash it?
A. Yes, that is the main advantage over straw or shavings. Lift it out of the nest box, hose it off, and let it drip dry before refitting. For a deeper clean, a scrub brush and a mild poultry-safe disinfectant will get into the texture. Because it is synthetic, it does not absorb droppings the way straw does. Never use boiling water on it.
Q. Do I still need straw or shavings on top?
A. Most keepers do not. The pad provides the cushioning and grip that hens look for, so you skip the straw job entirely. A thin layer of shavings on top will still help with absorbency if you prefer it.
Q. Does the pad help with cracked eggs?
A. It helps. A cushioned surface absorbs the impact of an egg being laid and reduces the chance of eggs knocking against each other when several hens share a bay. You will still want to collect eggs regularly.
Q. Which birds is it suitable for?
A. Chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl and most other poultry. It is the same material used commercially under laying hens.
