Feed and water for the week, in one box

A 4.7L Large Feeder on the wall and a 20 litre drum on a stand or crate in the shade. For a backyard flock of six to eight hens that is five days to a week between refills, so a few days away stops being a favour you ask the neighbours. Feed stays dry and off the ground, water stays sealed away from feet, droppings and sunlight. More than 80,000 chook keepers across Australia and New Zealand have made the switch.

What is in the kit?

A 4.7L Large Chicken Feeder with a mounting kit of two steel brackets and four screws, and a 20 litre drum drinker: black Australian made drum with lid and water-level window, click-and-connect outlet frame, and two genuine Lubing cups with the Dine-A-Chook float upgrade.

Mounting to wire mesh? Contact us about the stainless wire mesh mounting kit before you order.

What size flock is this kit for?

The 4.7L feeder suits 6–8 hens and holds roughly 3.7kg of feed, about 5–7 days on quality complete pellets. A hen drinks around 500ml a day and up to a litre in real heat, so a full 20 litre drum is roughly a week for six hens or five days for eight in mild weather; in a heatwave, halve that and check the level window daily. Two cups means two birds drink at the same moment.

Smaller flock or a tight coop? The 3.5L feeder and 4L twin cup drinker kit is the compact version. Want the drum on its own? See the 20L twin cup drum drinker.

How does the feeder keep feed off the ground?

Feed gravity-feeds into a hooded base. The hood gives your hens room to eat comfortably, but the shape stops the flicking and raking that scatters feed across the floor, and a built-in rain hood channels water away from the opening so the feed stays dry outdoors. No moving parts, no treadle, no training. Your chickens work it out in minutes. Less feed on the ground also means less on offer for sparrows and rodents.

How does the drum keep water clean?

The water sits in a black, opaque 20 litre drum that keeps light out, and only ever reaches a bird through a Lubing cup, which refills itself as the level drops. No open trough collecting shavings, dirt or droppings. Set the drum on a flat, shaded spot, raised on the adjustable drum drinker stand (sold separately), a crate or blocks so the cups sit about level with the eyes of your smallest bird. It stands on its own base and needs no wall.

What feed should I use with this kit?

Works well with quality complete feed — crumble or pellets. These give your hens balanced nutrition in every bite and reduce selective eating. Grain mixes let hens pick their favourites and miss essential nutrients.

If the feed level looks low in the tray, that’s by design — it keeps feed away from edges so your hens can’t flick it out. Try the finger test: push your finger into the opening. If you can move the feed, your chickens can reach it.

How is it built, and how is it backed?

Every component is injection moulded in Brisbane and assembled by hand in Townsville, a genuine Australian made product. UV-treated ASA plastic handles sun and rain year after year, and with no moving parts there is nothing to jam or seize. Dine-A-Chook started in 2009 as a weekend project in the garage, and we are still a family business that answers its own emails, New Zealand included. Backed by a 3-year warranty on the feeder and the drinker components we manufacture, and 12 months on the black drum and on the Lubing cups. Colour loss and fading, and rodent damage, are not covered. Full terms on our warranty page. Delivery is a flat $22.95 NZ-wide, any size order.

Q. How many chickens will this kit suit?
Q. Is the kit cheaper than buying the units separately?
A. Yes. The kit price is below the units bought one at a time, and it is one order. Delivery is a flat $22.95 per order either way.
Q. How does the feeder reduce feed waste?
A. The hooded base opening stops chickens from flicking, raking or billing feed onto the ground. There is room for your hens to eat comfortably, but the shape stops the scooping motion that scatters feed. A built-in rain hood channels water away from the opening, keeping the feed dry outdoors.
Q. Do the birds have to press anything to get water?
A. No. The upgraded float refills each cup automatically as the level drops, so there is always water sitting at the same height. Nothing to learn and nothing to push. Most flocks are drinking from it within the hour.
Q. Where does the drum go?
A. On a flat, shaded spot, raised on the adjustable drum drinker stand (sold separately), a crate or blocks so the cups sit about level with the eyes of your smallest bird. Shade keeps the water cool for the birds and slows algae. It stands on its own base and needs no wall.
Q. Will the drum grow algae in summer?
A. The drum is black and opaque so light does not reach the water, which is what algae needs. Keep it in the shade and rinse the drum out when you refill and it stays clean.
Q. How does the feeder mount, and at what height?
A. Moulded hooks are built into the back of the feeder, and it comes with two steel brackets and four screws for timber or metal. The drum is not wall-mounted; it stands on its own base. Set the feeder opening about level with the back of your smallest hen's neck. The Large Feeder is 710mm tall, so check your coop height. For wire mesh, contact us about the stainless mounting kit before you order.
Q. What feed should I use?
A. Quality complete feed, crumble or pellets, gives your hens balanced nutrition in every bite and reduces selective eating. Grain mixes let hens pick their favourites and miss essential nutrients. If the feed level looks low in the tray, that is by design. The finger test: if you can move the feed in the opening, your chickens can reach it.
Q. Will the feeder stop rats?
A. The feeder is designed to reduce what attracts rodents, not to seal them out. By keeping feed contained and off the ground, it removes one of the main attractants. Keep the coop floor clear of spilled feed at dusk, when rodents are most active. If you are dealing with a persistent rodent problem, contact us and we will help you work through it.
Q. What is the warranty?
A. Three years on the feeder and on the drinker components Dine-A-Chook manufactures, and 12 months on the black drum and on the Lubing cups. Colour loss and fading, and rodent damage, are not covered. Full terms are on our warranty page.
