If you've ever used a standard chicken feeder, you know that chooks like to throw their feed everywhere. This is natural behaviour, as chickens forage by using their beaks to push through plants and their claws to scratch up protein-rich worms and insects. The problem is that when they try this with chicken feed, they make a mess!

Unfortunately, chicken feed that ends up on the ground usually doesn't get eaten, wasting money.

Wasted feed on the ground also causes other problems:

• The smell of rotting feed attracts rodents to your chicken coop
• It becomes an easy food source for pests like wild birds, rodents, and insects
• The feed can become mouldy, making your chickens ill if they consume it
• The feed becomes contaminated with poo, passing diseases and parasites on to your birds

Keeping feed in the feeder is the whole point, right? You’d think it would be easy. But most feeders don’t manage to do this simple task.

Because chickens eat by putting their head into a Dine-A-Chook feeder, they cannot thrash and throw food around. They can’t get their feet in there either! What Type of Chicken Feed to Use in a Dine-A-Chook Feeder

Choosing the right type of chicken feed to use in your Dine-A-Chook feeder is important for reducing waste.

While a Dine-A-Chook chicken feeder is designed to work with most types of chicken feed, it is most effective with a pelleted chicken feed or a mash. Using a pellet or mash is healthier for your chickens too!

We recommend a pellet or mash because they are the feeds most likely to help prevent waste. Chickens scratch and rake feed onto the ground searching for the tastiest morsel. Therefore, feeds with high variability, like scratch mix and other grain mixes, encourage chickens to seek out their favourite parts, like sunflower seeds and corn. This causes more spillage and waste, and the problems that come along with them, like rats and mice. Scratch mix is often the cheapest feed, but all the waste means it ends up costing more money in the long run.

An additional problem is the fact that chickens consuming a scratch mix are unlikely to be getting a balanced diet. A general scratch mix is intended as a treat, not a balanced diet. A grain mix that is sold as a “complete” feed will have been fortified with extra protein, vitamins, and minerals. But these additions are usually either powders, which often sink to the bottom of the mix and are wasted, or pellets, which chickens rarely consume enough of.

Do not use a molasses-coated feed or other sticky feed.

How many Dine-A-Chook feeders do I need?

How many feeders are required is a common question. One feeder may service up to 8 chickens. It is essential to be mindful of the size of your coop and if having only one feeder could cause a pecking order amongst your flock. Consider using two feeders and placing them apart. If you have less than eight chooks, one feeder will be excellent. Adding a second or third will reduce the time between refills.

What is the difference between the Red and White feeder?

Other than a slight price variation, there is no other difference. It comes down to personal preference. Do you like the red feeder or the white, or maybe the one with the red base and the white top?

Dine-A-Chook chicken feeders are made in Australia. More importantly, we don't assemble imported parts; we injection mold our proprietary components in Brisbane, Queensland. Are Dine-A-Chook chicken feeders made from safe material?

All of our chicken feeders and drinkers are made from commercial quality ASA material. ASA is a certified BPA-free material. ASA can be considered a UV-resistant version of ABS with its excellent weather-ability and heat resistance. Cheaper feeders often are made from lower-grade plastics that have weak UV resistance and will fade, crack, or turn yellow very quickly.
